The Europe human liver models market is expected to grow from US$ 84,347.25 thousand in 2021 to US$ 1,87,244.81 thousand by 2028; it is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 12.1% from 2021 to 2028.
The UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain are major economies in Europe. Escalating focus on developing alternatives for animal testing models is expected to surge the market growth. There has been an increase in the number of animals used in research with the rising research and development in medical industry. These animals are required in huge numbers in preclinical testing. Pain, distress, and death of animals during scientific experiments have been a topic of discussion for a long time. Several cases show that animal models cannot always predict the body’s response to drugs, especially during drug toxicology studies. This is because the metabolism of drugs and toxins in humans differs significantly from animals, making it almost impossible to study drug metabolism in experimental models such as laboratory rodent species. The field of alternative research has accelerated over the past 30 years. In addition, several regulations have been introduced in recent years that restrict the use of animals in research activities around the region. Methods such as in vitro testing, cell cultures, computer simulations, and new imaging/analysis techniques have been proposed as an alternative means of drug and chemical testing to avoid excessive use of animals. Bioinformatic tools, in vitro cell cultures, enzymatic screens, and model organisms are necessary to integrate various computer models. The use of modern analytical techniques, data collection, and statistical methods to analyze the results of alternative protocols can provide reliable results. Further, these methods are less time consuming and cost-efficient, and require a limited workforce. With the advent of three-dimensional (3D) cell culture to make organoids, more relevant human organoid models are being explored to provide safe and effective drug testing, thus minimizing the need for animal testing. It is necessary to develop alternative test models that can provide an environment as close as possible to the human body. Various institutes are involved in developing alternative methods for drug development and biomedical research. Since liver models can serve as an alternative to animal models, the current focus on reducing animal use in research is expected to support the Europe human liver models market growth.
In the case of COVID-19, Europe is highly affected especially France and Russia. The current COVID-19 outbreak has not caught EU-funded research off guard. The MSCA of the European Commission supports outstanding researchers in finding solutions to challenges posed by the novel coronavirus disease COVID-19 and other infectious diseases. Also, to facilitate the launch of clinical trials relating to COVID-19, authorities have allowed expedited authorization procedures for the initial assessment of authorization requests. However, remerging waves of COVID-19 have mixed impacts on the market due to the closing of clinical trials sites. As per Phesi's analysis from September 2020, global clinical trial sites suspensions peaked in June, and after an initial drop, had risen again and had a significant impact on phase 2 and 3 trials. With increased global economic uncertainty across sectors, 2021 is expected to be challenging for most clinical development organizations worldwide. Clinical research is vital to developing new treatments and improved understanding of disease, and COVID-19 presents many challenges. The Governments in the region are planning a safe and sustainable restart of non-COVID trials. As of September 2020, the NIHR Clinical Research Network data has shown that non-COVID studies are restarting, with 45% of studies open to recruitment. Additionally, organoids are being used by researchers around the EuroStemCell partnership. For example, an international group of scientists, including researchers from IMBA Institute of Molecular Biotechnology of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, slowed SARS-CoV-2 infection in organoids, demonstrating the potential blocking effect of a drug already in clinical trials. The researchers are undergoing various research to manage the COVID-19 outbreak. Thus, increased research activities will lead to vital opportunities for the market.
With the new features and technologies, vendors can attract new customers and expand their footprints in emerging markets. This factor is likely to drive the Europe human liver models market. The Europe human liver models market is expected to grow at a good CAGR during the forecast period.
